Rhizopon Animation:
Propagation of
grape cuttings using the Basal Long Soak Method by stenting

(RELOAD page to replay)

Wine grape hardwood cuttings develop the best root formation when they are propagated using Rhizopon rooting solutions by the basal long soak method. You make your own rooting solutions using Rhizopon AA Water Soluble Tablets.

First the grape cuttings are prepared. Grapes are propagated using the stenting technique where the cuttings are grafted and rooted simultaneously.
After preparation, the cuttings are placed, basal end down, in a plastic treatment tank.

This demonstration uses a treatment tank that takes 100 liters of rooting solution.

Pour 100 liters of water into a large mixing container. Using a small bucket, take out about 6 liters of water from the mixing container.

Count the required number Rhizopon AA Water Soluble Tablets.

Rhizopon has made a simple tablet counter that you can download from the Rhizopon website

Print the tablet counter onto heavy paper. Fold the tablet counter along the marked lines to make two raised edges. Place the tablet counter on a flat table. Spread some Rhizopon AA Water Soluble Tablets onto the tablet counter. Slide the Tablets, using a ruler, toward the folded corner. The printed markers allow you to count the required number of tablets.

To root grape cuttings, use a rooting solution containing Rhizopon AA Water Soluble Tablets at 80 to 400 tablets per 100 liters of water.

The number of tablets per liters of water varies based upon the species or variety. For a different volume of water, other than 100 liters, you should adjust the number of tablets in proportion to the volume.

Put the counted Rhizopon tablets into the six liter bucket of water.

Stir the solution to dissolve the tablets.

An electric hand blender is one way to stir the solution. Stir the solution about one minute or until the tablets fully dissolved. Some insoluble particles may appear in the solution; they do not affect the rooting ability. The active ingredients fully dissolve.

Pour the Rhizopon rooting solution back from the six liter bucket into the large mixing container to bring the solution back to the original 100 liters. Mix the solution thoroughly.

Pour the rooting solution into the treatment tank. The rooting solution must cover the basal ends of all the cuttings to a depth  from 2 to 5 cm.
Adjust the tank to the horizontal position so that all cuttings are at uniform depth in the solution.

Let the basal ends of the cuttings soak in the rooting solution between 12 and 48 hours.

Let us look inside the grape cuttings.

Rhizopon rooting solutions contain forming substances called auxins. The cuttings absorb the auxins into the basal end where they are stored. The plant  uses the auxins by re-programming  the plant cells at the basal end of the cuttings. These cell become new root cells.

After Rhizopon rooting solution treatment you plant the cuttings in media.

Symmetric roots, with high root mass, will soon form around the basal end of the cuttings.

Rhizopon rooting solution treated grape cuttings develop a high root mass and a symmetric root system. These cuttings produce fine quality plants that will have decades of grape production.
